Dublin Fashion Student To Go On Gap Year

Student Danielle Crowley (19) has spoken of her excitement at her upcoming trip to San Francisco to work in that city’s world famous Gap clothing outlet.
“I woke up this morning, and I was like, ohmigod – I can’t believe it’s only two days before I leave, I’m, like, so looking forward to it, y’know? I think I’m just gonna die with the excitement,” she said.
Ms Crowley had just completed the 2nd year of her three-year BA in Fashion Design at Griffith College, Dublin. However, rather than go straight back into her studies this semester, the Goatstown resident opted instead to defer her final year in favour of a Gap year.
Gap years are becoming increasingly popular with fashion students who want to gain valuable experience working amongst the hustle and bustle of on-the-ground retail in the respected clothing company. According to Ms Crowley, her tutor had advised her to take this option:
“Mrs Woods said, like, maybe it would be a good idea if I got a job and see what it was like to, like, y’know, work? And I was like, work? Ohmigod, working would be horrible! My brother works, and like, he has to get up early in the morning and stuff? But then she mentioned the Gap year, and I was like, ohmigod, I love Gap, I’m always in the one in Arnotts! That would be so cool, y’know?”
When she arrives in San Francisco later this week Ms Crowley will be working 9-6 for the next ten months in the prestigious Ocean Avenue branch, renowned as the first ever Gap store opened back in 1969.
“When I decided I was gonna do a Gap year, I got on the phone to my girlfriend Shoneen and told her, and she was, like, ohmigod, my dad knows people who work high up in Gap, and I was like, ohmigod, no way, that’s such a coincidence, you never told me! And she was, like, I sweartogod it’s true! So, he, like, arranged, y’know, to, like, get me work experience in their flagship shop or something? Which was like, ohmigod, so cool! Shoneen’s dad is such a ledge, y’know?”
The fashion student says she’s looking forward to dealing with customers firsthand: “I can’t wait to spend all day chatting to people about, like, clothes and fashion and, y’know, celebrities and stuff? And get paid for it? It’s not even like work!
“I know when I’m in town or Dundrum the staff in the clothes shops are like so rude and, like, I dunno, depressed all the time? And I’m like, cheer up forgodsake, you should be, like, happy to be working in Zara, y’know? But most of them are total dunces when it comes to fashion, like. I won’t be like that at all, I’m going to love working in Gap, although, y’know, my ambition is, like, to eventually design high class women’s evening wear?”
Ms Crowley also revealed her family’s delight at her impending work holiday: “When I told my parents about it they, were like ohmigod, you’re going to work? And I was like, yeh-huh, its Gap in San Francisco, like? And they were, y’know, really happy and proud of me and hugging me and stuff? And I was like, Mum, Dad, take a chill pill forgodsake, it’s not like I won an Oscar like! Hello? Like, overreaction?”
